Editorial Services

Below you'll find the different type of editing being offered:

SUBSTANTIVE EDITING

Substantive editing combines copy editing with creative organization, meaning that aside from making sure that the manuscript is structurally sound (i.e. grammar, sentence construction, spelling, etc.), I'll also be looking to make sure that the flow of the story makes sense, that there's consistency in terms of characterization, story line, and timeline. This may require moving sentences or even paragraphs around in order for the overall story to be a better read. Rewriting may also be suggested but any actual writing, especially if it means changing large parts of the manuscript, will be left to the author but I'll be there to guide and make any clarifications, if and when necessary.

It needs to be noted that the manuscript itself should be one that has already been completely written, not one that is a work in progress. I won't be telling you that you should change your plot or that one of your characters doesn't fit in. As is the case with all the services I offer, I'm after consistency, both in style and in substance, but I respect your creativity and want to keep your original vision for your manuscript intact even after the corrections and changes have been made.

This particular type of editing will require a minimum of ten days and may require more, depending on the length of the manuscript.

COPY EDITING

Copy editing involves looking for any errors in terms of grammar, word usage, sentence construction, spelling, punctuation, etc. What we're after here is accuracy so that the text is able to correctly convey the idea the author has in mind. We also want consistency because, more often than not, discerning readers will take note when something seems off, whether it be a simple case of different spellings or something more complex like a character having blond hair and then suddenly having brown hair somewhere in the text.

Do take note that copy editing is more intensive than proofreading, requiring more read-throughs in order to make sure that any and all errors have been caught and corrected. There are different levels of copy editing, ranging from a light copy edit to a heavy one, depending on the number and types of corrections that need to be made.

This particular type of editing will require a minimum of five days and may require more, depending on the length of the manuscript.

PROOFREADING

Proofreading is often the final phase of editing before a manuscript is ready to published, whether in the traditional way or digitally. There's an assumption that the manuscript is in its final draft and that all that is required is a run-through to make sure that all the necessary corrections have been made and that everything is in order. Usually, proofreading involves two copies: one with the suggested edits and one with the edits made, and then latter is compared against the former to double check if the editorial changes have, indeed, been made.  If there is only one copy, meaning no visual comparison between two succeeding drafts can be made, proofreading can still be done.

Please keep in mind that while proofreading and copy editing may sound similar, they're two separate processes. When I proofread, I will be going into it believing that what I'm receiving is the final draft and that it has been polished and will be needing that last buff and shine in order to be as ready for publishing as possible. I'll be checking the manuscript for consistency and uniformity so that the text looks its best.

This particular type of editing will require a minimum of three days but may require more, depending on the length of the manuscript.
